The breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a large tree that grows up to 70 feet tall and is native to the South Pacific Islands. It was introduced to Jamaica in 1793 by Captain William Bligh of the HMS Bounty. Bligh had been sent on a mission by the British government to bring breadfruit plants to the Caribbean in order to provide a cheap and nutritious food source for the enslaved Africans who worked on the sugar plantations.
Breadfruit is a starchy fruit with a potato-like texture, often roasted, boiled, or fried as a delicious Jamaican staple.
